Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapists perform an important role of helping people who are suffering from illness, injury or disability that prevent them from performing their daily tasks independently and effectively to recover, develop, improve or restore the highest level of independence and maintain daily living skills. It is the occupational therapist's job to provide intervention and use treatments to help these people perform their daily activities in a more functional and independent way. These activities include daily living needs from buttoning a shirt, brushing teeth, combing hair, eating, cooking and using a computer to improving cognitive skills and coordination. These professionals also develop and implement exercises to help patients increase or regain strength and dexterity as well as teaching them how to operate adaptive equipments like wheel-chairs, splints and eating aids. Some occupational therapists work solely with certain age groups from infants and toddlers at risk for developmental delays, school children to elderly patients in leading more productive lives.

Some therapists may work solely with a particular disability like the mentally ill, developmentally disabled or emotionally disturbed. Entering this rewarding and lucrative field requires a master's degree or higher in occupational therapy. Some college majors to take include biology, psychology, anatomy, anthropology, liberal arts and sociology. To be licensed as an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR) in United States, One must graduate from an accredited educational program and pass a national certification examination. Some states require continuing education and workshops to maintain licensure. This profession can be both physically and emotionally draining that's why patience and a sincere commitment to the care of others are necessary qualities of those considering this career.

A 26 percent increase in employment is expected through 2018. The rapidly aging population and medical advances are the main contributing factors to the growth of this profession. Occupational therapists earned a median annual salary of $69,630 in 2009.
